Situated by Sydney’s first water supply, The Tank Stream Hotel draws its namesake and curatorial vision from its historic Pitt Street location.

Hand-formed with patinated stainless steel mesh, Michael Baird’s large-scale wall relief appears to float across the wall with a sense of whimsy and freedom as though adrift from its moorings or caught by the breeze. The translucency of the mesh, with its folds and undulations, contribute to the water-like quality of the piece, illustrating a perfect analogy and connection with the nearby Tank Stream and the ebb and flow of people moving through.

Says Michael of this work, “When I was first approached by Curatorial+Co. for this commission, I was immediately taken by how suitable my work would be for the hotel. I think the finished piece sits very well in the space and is a credit to all involved.”

Ariella Friend’s artwork made from found wood and discarded materials evokes the vitality of water through her layered compositions, capturing the essence of sunlight as it catches a rippling stream. The interplay of translucent hues, light and texture mirrors the ephemeral nature of glistening water and the tension between humans and nature. Ariella’s work reflects the dynamic energy of the Tank Stream’s historical waters, inviting a contemplative connection to the city’s aquatic heritage and blending modern abstraction with the timeless rhythm of flowing currents.
